Umpiring in the LMBA

Umpiring is a great way for youth, teens and adults to get involved with the game.  A lot of umpires are often current or former players and coaches, however, no baseball background is required to pursue certification as an umpire.

Individuals must be a minimum of 12 years old in order to start working towards a Level 1 certification.

The amount an umpire gets paid per game depends on the division (11U, 13U, 15U & 18U), the caliber (A, AA, AAA), their level of certification and the umpire's role (home plate or bases).  The Lacombe Minor Baseball Association follows the umpire fees established by Baseball Alberta which varies from $45 - $60 per game.

Along with umpiring individual league games, local umpires often have the opportunity to umpire in local tournaments.  In the past, surrounding associations have relied on umpires from Lacombe to umpire in their community (eg. Blackfalds, Clive, Ponoka, etc.).

Please click on the following Baseball Alberta links for additional information about umpiring or contact the Umpire and Facility Director listed on the Executive page.

Here is some information on what the LMBA provides to our Umpires and what they are required to provide for themselves in the 2024 season:

What the LMBA provides to new Umpires who will be umping for us, these items are yours to keep:

  • Hat
  • Shirt
  • Umpire Kit (Counter, brush, ball holder)

What the new Umpire will need to provide themselves:

  • Pants (black or grey track pants, black preferred)
  • Catcher's Mask
  • Chest Protector
  • Shin Pads
  • Protective Cup

While the LMBA does have umpire equipment available to loan out if needed the expectation is that each Umpire will acquire their own.

Returning Umpires:

None of the above should come as a surprise and hopefully you have all of your required equipment as the LMBA will not be providing the hat, shirt or Ump Kit.  You are required to supply your own equipment.  If needed, there is loaner equipment available to fill a short term gap.  We request that you use this as a last resort.
